IU Libraries Africana Collections
The African Studies Collection in the Herman B Wells Library
is highly ranked among comparable collections. Its vast print, audiovisual, and digital holdings include a significant body of materials in African languages, as well as three special collections: the Somali Collection, considered one of the top three in the world; the H.K. Banda Archive, a collection of primary materials on Malawi and southern and central Africa; and the Liberian Collections, which consist of a diverse range of materials collected over many years by noted Liberia scholars. Other rare Africana materials are housed in the Lilly Library. The African Studies librarian is currently vacant.
Indiana University African Studies Theses and Dissertations
A collection of graduate papers written by M.A. and Ph.D. candidates featuring African content and compiled by African Studies librarian Mireille Djenno.
National African Language Resource Center
The National African Language Resource Center is a federally funded center dedicated to the promotion of African language teaching and learning in the United States, including the strengthening of language pedagogy and assessment, and the development of resources. It is directed by Alwiya Omar.
IU Sidney and Lois Eskanazi Museum of Art
The Africa Collection of the Art Museum counts among the top university collections in the country; the permanent collection is on exhibit in the Raymond and Laura Wielgus Gallery. Educators can contact the museum's education department to schedule class tours.
Indiana University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology
The Indiana University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (IUMAA) is a teaching museum with significant holdings of African objects. Kaila Cogdill, an Africa specialist, is the curator of collections.
Archives of Traditional Music
The Archives of Traditional Music have the largest collection of African sound recordings in the United States. Dr. Alan Burdette is the director.
Black Film Center/Archive
The Black Film Center/Archive is a repository of films by and about black people and a center for research and scholarship on black film traditions. Its director is Novotny Lawrence.
EVIA Digital Archive
The EVIA (Ethnographic Video for Instruction Analysis) Digital Archive is a project for the preservation of field research video and its preparation as an instructional resource. Scholars of Africa have contributed to the core collections. Associate vice provost for research Dr. Ruth Stone is co-principal investigator with Dr. Lester Monts of the University of Michigan.
