The African Studies Program, the Wright School of Education’s P-16 Center, and several other HLS areas studies centers recently hosted the 2019 HLS Summer Institute. This year’s institute concentrated on internationalizing K-6 curricula across disciplines, while addressing Indiana educational standards. More than 30 teachers from Indiana participated.
Guest speakers included: Jill Woerner (former World Language and Global Learning Specialist for the Indiana Department of Education, Spanish Teacher, and CSCTFL/ACTFL Board Member), Wendy Tamborino (Educator and participant in the Global Literacy Invitations Project), Tavy Aherne (Associate Director, African Studies Program), Eli Konwest (Associate Director, Center for the Study of Global Change), Ricardo Martins (Ph.D. student, Department of Spanish and Portuguese), Jermaine Butler (Ph.D. student, Near Eastern Languages and Cultures and Central Eurasian Studies), Tara Darcy (Ph.D., Professor, IU Biology Department), Brian Cwiek (Ph.D. candidate, Departments of Central Asian Studies and History), and Mark Trotter (Associate Director, Russian and East European Institute).
