The Carleton T. Hodge Prize was established by the African Studies Program to recognize annually one of our advanced Ph.D. students for their commitment to excellence in African Studies. Those eligible for the award are Indiana University students in any discipline, who are advanced in the Ph.D. program, have a concentration on topics relating to Africa, and are actively engaged in African Studies Program activities.
Faculty members are invited to submit a letter of nomination (only one nomination per faculty member), along with the student’s transcript and CV. In addition to addressing the nominee’s academic achievements, the letter should provide evidence of involvement in the intellectual life of the Program and in outreach to the wider public. It should also clearly indicate the student’s progress toward the Ph.D. and, if possible, the projected Ph.D. completion date. The nomination should be accompanied by a brief (one or two page) biographical statement from the student describing his or her work and participation in African Studies.
