Intensive language training has been offered at the Bloomington campus of Indiana University since 1950. Up to 200 students participate each year in the summer Language Workshop, completing a full year of college language instruction during a single eight-week summer session. The workshop currently offers Swahili.

Undergraduate students attending the summer Language Workshop for advanced language study are eligible for funding through the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS). IU students may be eligible for further support from the university.
