Course Description

This course is designed to provide a foundation for conducting research and applied work in, and on, Africa. We examine African Studies as an area of knowledge production with an emphasis on the historical, intellectual, and institutional contexts that have shaped the field over time. As well, we focus on a) the approaches and methods of inquiry used by scholars and professionals of various disciplinary backgrounds; b) the identification and analysis of sources; c) new modes of scholarly communication and publication; and d) the ethics and politics of research and publication. Faculty members share their research and discuss associated conceptual issues and methodological techniques.
